Considering Ubuntu

Asked by garry

I just bought a new hard drive for my netbook (emachine) and am considering installing Ubuntu as the OS. However, judging by the huge amount of poblems and issues being submitted in this forum daily I am now not too sure.

It seems virtually everything from drivers, internet connection, video display, sound output...everything needs technical help after Ubuntu installation....

The blurb and magazines i've read all say its a straightforward, very easy to use system that anyone can use. All I want is something that can be installed, and runs efficiently and quietly....this forum would suggest otherwise.

Is it really worth all the hassle.... I want to move away from Windows O/S but at least that seems to work and installs without any problems.

Windows has just as many problems submitted. Where I work are constantly calling Microsoft up for assistance with their OS.

All I can say is try it, you can but the ISO on a bootable USB and trial the OS. Windows and Mac OS are not perfect and also have stupid issues and so on, just like Ubuntu.

As the song says, every OS sucks.

The difference are the issues in Linux are more clearly documented and people know where to come for help... here or the forums....

With windows, your told to call Microsoft who will tell you to cal <insert company here> who will tell you.... not their problem call Microsoft.

Try it, its free. You might like it. Its not for everyone. There are other Linux distros arond too like Suse, Fedora and Debian, all have different abilities and strengths.

Also you dont even have to do anything to try it, you can download it and try it from a usb or cd, without even installing it....

just put it in your (cd/dvd)-rom/usb drive reboot and choose try without install

also try it online: http://www.ubuntu.com/tour/en/#
