How to install Windows on an Ubuntu machine

Asked by Faisal Misle

My laptop originally had Windows 7, a few weeks ago, I installed Ubuntu 10.10 completely overriding the Win 7 OS. I now want to reinstall Win 7, but my disk drive is faulty, so I cannot use CD. I have copied the files into a USB, when I boot, BIOS does not recognize the OS in the USB.

I also tried running the .exe using WINE on Ubuntu, and got "The setup installer cannot find a location for the temp files, make sure you have at least 700 MB of space free"

I do have the space free, but my guess is that its not recognized because I'm using WINE emulator.

How can I get back Windows 7 as a full OS?

Maverick is EOL in 3 months. You may want to consider upgrading.

The Windows installer will not run with Wine. You will need a Virtualbox or VMware system to run it in.

What VMware or Virtualbox should I use?

That doesn't make sense at all. That's like asking:

"Which Microsoft Word should I use"

....

Actually no, just format a USB and set it up with NTFS file system, then load the desired Windows OS onto the USB, and then boot using USB and Windows should install overriding Ubuntu... took me like 8 hours to figure this out, but it worked.
