the latest version just downloaded from ubuntu is just showing cmd interface ,where is OS GUI ?

I just downloaded the iso image from ubuntu , I created a virtual machine at VMWare and started using the iso and installation procedure , after installation it just showed a command line interface , I entered the credentials but no further step ,its still cmd , where is GUI of OS ?

I used stand alone version which runs along side with windows , it got installed well,it also shows that my internet connection is established , but no software is getting downloaded neither any browsing

Hi usman:
Whilst you can just reinstall the desktop packages, its not entirely clear how you got to your current state. Which is the "latest version" you downloaded - Is it 11.10 (Oneiric), or did you use an experimental build of 12.04 (Precise)? Did you get any errors during the install?

To install the desktop packages, try running this command from the virtual machine instance to install them via the apt-get tool. Note you will need to be connected to the network:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install unity-2d ubuntu-desktop

then restart your vm (you could do it without the restart, but a restart should work fine)
