How to resize partition for installing oracle 11gXE?

Asked by akshay shah

I have ubuntu 11.10 and i am trying to install oracle 11g Xe on it. I have read that Ext4 filesystem is not completely compatible for oracle 11 g and one needs Ext3 filesystem for installing the same. My 'root' Partition has 7.5 GB free space(it's 15GB partition) and 'home' has 29 GB free space. Both are Ext4 partitions. How should i go ahead with the oracle 11g XE installation as oracle 11g User datafile itself is of 11GB. So i might need a partition space around say 15GB which is not available with my root partition.

You can resize Linux partitions in liveCD so that they are not mounted and in use. Be sure your data is backed up in case of catastrophe

You can resize partitions with Gparted, but you can't resize a mounted partitions for obvious reasons. You'll need to use the Ubuntu LIveCD which has gparted as one of the installed applications, and I can also recommend the Gparted LiveCD as it boots fast and gets the job done.

The actual type of filesystem shouldn't make any difference as far as I know. Any application will do reads/writes via the OS layers (linux) that deal with such things. The actual mechanics of doing this is not generally a requirement for an application. Ext4 partitions are more robust in as much as a disaster (power outage, hang etc) during a write operation is less likely to cause complete damage to a file or filesystem, since the journaled file system has the ability to backtrack the partial write operation to repair itself.

While you may not need to change the type of filesystem you have, it does seem that your partitions are a little small for the purposes that you intend. Resizing may therefore be necessary: It's highly recommend that you back up all your important data before doing this operation.

I know nothing about Oracle and 11gXE, but this article seems to be a good installation primer (and it says nothing about ext4 or otherwise)
