New user, Old PC

Asked by Liz Willoughby

The charity I volunteer with has an old PC with 128mb RAM & 8gb hard drive (I forgot to keep a note of the CPU). I want to replace MS Millenium with Ubuntu (ME is awful and we've lost the Admin password). Which version of Ubuntu would be best and where can I download from please? We will have to run MS Access as it is used for our master database.

128Mb is really not enough to run any of the *buntus. The lightest version is Lubuntu. The minimum system requirements are 128Mb although 256Mb is recommended.

You would be better to try a very lightweight distro ---something line Slitaz

...or increase the amount of RAM, if you can do so economically.

Just a thought. Working at a charity, you may find a computer repair shop, that would increase your ram for very little or no cost. I bought a used 256Mb stick for $3.00 + tax.
