How can I install 11.10 on a laptop that doesn't support Unity?

Asked by Mark Steele

When I installed 11.04 I was informed that the PC wasn't good enough to run Unity but I was able to use Gnome 2 but I gather this has now been dropped. Can I install 11.10 from the alternate CD in such a way that I have a fully working upgraded machine with Gnome instead of Unity. Or has Unity been amended so it will run on older hardware?

You can install it, and select Unity 2D as default session at login. By this way you will not have problem.

There are a number of desktops available for Ubuntu so there should be no problem with the install.

By default you will get Unity 2D which is similar to Unity but less resource hungry. But you can choose something else instead. I want a desktop more similar to the old one so I ran the following command.

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

This isn't Gnome2 its Gnome 3 but with the menus set similar to the old interface. Once installed you select which desktop you want from the login screen.

Select unity 2D from login screen or switch to Xuubuntu of Lubuntu. both are Low on system resources and are surprisingly fast even on older hardware. these are ubuntu derivatives and are fully supported.

Linux Mint, which is a derivative of Ubuntu, still use old Gnome 2.3

Can you help with this problem?
