how to install ubuntu withouth replacing vista

Asked by yz

Hi,
Currently I'm using Wubi. It is nice, but kinda slow and heats up my computer very much! When it's to hot, everything just stops working, and I have to hard reboot my computer (which is dangerous, can't hurt windows)

I was wondering if I can install ubuntu withouth replacing windows vista AND keep my data?

Virtual machine and Wubi is not the answer I'm looking for.

Thanks :)

Installing Ubuntu outside of Wubi will give the same issues. It isn't ANY different to a 'real' install, its just stored in its own partition instead of in a fileon NTFS.

I suggest you run your backup so that it is up to date then resize your NTFS, Win7 can do this itself but the Ubuntu CD can do it too. You can then install to the new free space and restore your user data.

You sure? Because my comp reached 100 C in about 10 minutes.. The only thing I'm doing is terminal. While on windows, it's about 75-85 C average. I remember when I run ubuntu from VM.. Even then, the temperature was 75 C

Before installing Ubuntu, defrag Vista, run Memtest from LiveCD, clean hardware from dust such as fan(s).
In case also run BIOS selftest and verify settings in power management.
Please refer to installation guides regarding dual boot.

Have a plan ready about partitioning, e.g. separate rootfs and /home.

Wubi gives the same OS and uses the hardware the same. Changing from Wubi willmake zero difference. Have you tried Unity2D ?

Could you check if you hear fans with both Windows and Ubuntu ?
Do you have same issue if you run:
Ubuntu on a virtual machine => Windows kernel manages fan and power
Ubuntu on Wubi (or installed alongside) => linux kernel manages fan and power

Can you help with this problem?
