install hangs 11.10 & 10.04 both versions

Asked by Humphrey van Polanen Petel

Install hangs for 11.10 (i386 & amd64) as well as for 10.04 LTS (i386 & amd64), both via cd and wubi.
The cd install asks for my time and location and then hangs
The wubi install doesn't ask that question but hangs during the copying of files.
Restarting the wubi install gets a bit further the second try, but not the third try.

all four iso-files checked okay
all four cd's integrity-checked okay

note that I *did* say that the wubi-install hung as well

Could you try to install without network connection (no WIFI and Ethernet cable unpluged).

pulled the cable
ran wubi with the iso in the same directory
install still hangs

Try nomodeset: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 (post #8 is for the wubi install). Or maybe acpi workarounds.

Remember if the workarounds get you through the install you'll also need them on the first boot following the install. Then run all updates, go to 'additional-drivers' and see if there are any custom drivers available.

I tried adding the nomodeset and that worked fine.
However, out of curiosity I decided not to add that nomodeset after the install.
I ran all the updates (290) and activated the recommended nvidia driver.
Now the system appears to be okay.
So, do I still need to add the nomodeset?
Or, how do I determine that my system is set up correctly?

No, nomodeset is just to get you booted until you have the correct driver installed.

You can review this for more info: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia

Okay.

Just a comment:.
While I am very impressed with the quality of the install, I suggest that an install hanging is very likely to be an insurmountable barrier to people who are not computer-savvy.
I suggest placing some appropriate info behind a "if install hangs" button on the download page.
