According to Disk Utility, which I tried to format drive subsequently, attempted installation left an allocated 300Gb disk with a partitions: 8Gb swap , 8Gb extended, 1kB free and 0.0kB free...??? Where's the missing 284Gb?

Please help.

Have you checked if there are any HDD mounted? If there are, a new partition table cannot be created.

Could you provide partition table, with command:
   sudo fdisk -l
where "-l" is lowercase "-L".

Can you help with this problem?
