Ubuntu Asus Eee 1008HA Netbook

Asked by TASSOS PANAGIOTOPOULOS

Hello.

I own an Asus Eee 1008 HA netbook running Windows XP.

I am thinking of turning it into dual boot with Ubuntu.

Which version of Ubuntu do you suggest? Should I expect any problems? Are there netbook/eee specific ubuntu builds?

Thank you

The EEE series is well supported under ubuntu, thanks to the efforts of the debian EEE project.

Everything should pretty much work. The only problem is that the intel GMA 950 is pretty slow. You may wish to install a desktop other than Unity, or Gnome3, if using a recent ubuntu release (ie anything but the LTS). This way you avoid desktop effects which can be very slow under low-end graphics processors (your mileage, and personal tolerance for slow may vary).

You can try a stock ubuntu or xubuntu install, then if you go with ubuntu, and don't like the default session, you can always use the package manager to install a different one.

Thanks a lot for the info mycae.

Just one more question.

I have installed ubuntu 11.10. In case I want to downgrade to 11.04 do I just install on the previous installation?

(I'm a linux-rookie)... :)

Yes, you can simply overwrite your previous install. Note that any data you have might be lost, so you should back it up.
