I want to backup my Windows XP files

Asked by Roland Lindgren

My Windows XP Home is frozen at desktop. cannot open anything from there. Decided to try Ubuntu 9.10 from the CD instead of fixing XP. I am new to this and not sure which is best way to go.

Can I backup the Windows file system using Brasero before installing Ubuntu? I have no clue what happened to XP. It might have a virus, am not sure.

Should I reinstall Windows first?

I'm confused. Don't know enough to know where to begin.
But I'd rather go Ubuntu now than back to Microsoft and all the never ending problems and costs.

Any help appreciated.

Roland

If you have a single CD drive then I don't believe you can remove the CD to insert a blank to burn. You will need to boot USB, or grab a USB CD drive to boot from.

Why do you not already have the data backed up? What id the freezing was caused by a failed drive motor and the data was irretrievanle, even in Ubuntu. Where is your data then??

Reinstalling windoze will erase your data unless they are on a separate partition/drive.

Bracero is a cd/DVD burning app. This is what action parsnip is referring to.

If you have a cd drive, you can run Ubuntu in trial mode to recover your data without having to install ubuntu which might erase your data

How many data have you to backup ?
You could boot on Ubuntu USB key (or CD) and check if you can see your Windows disk. During boot, choose "Try" instead of "Install" and then System->Administration->Gparted partition editor to check system see NTFS partition, then check NTFS file system.

Can you help with this problem?
