info on system compatibility and minimum ubuntu system requirements

hello to all
i want to install a ubuntu on my lap-top
my lap-top is a veteran
fujitsu siemens
cpu 650 mHz
RAM 256
HDD 20gb currently it runs on winxp so a would like to ask if anyone can tell me witch version of linux, ubuntu or any of their cousins will be most appropriate replacement of the WinXp

I suggest you use Lubuntu, it will free up more resources for your applications

yes...andrew was right. install Lubuntu on your laptop. It's just an LXDE interface for ubuntu. alternatively you cal also try Xubuntu, which is based on XFCE. It is also very light on system resources.

how many partition will it need, because it only has 20 gb

as the prior user suggested, lubuntu would be your best bet.

have a 7Gb ext4 / partition
a 512mb partition for swap
use the rest for /home formatted ext4

Should be smooth sailing :)
