Installing a new version of Ubuntu

Asked by Daniel Argyropoulos

I am using an older version of Ubuntu (7.04) and I want to switch to a newer version.

Can this be done by getting the CD-Rom in an easy way (since I am not very experienced with the use of software)?

Are instructions included taht explain the process step-by-step or should I contact somebody who is more used to doing this kind of thing?

Thanks

Hi, you could try contacting your Loco (Local Community) team:
http://loco.ubuntu.com/

Many have a CD distribution service, or might be able to suggest the closest place you can buy an Ubuntu CD. There are also outlets like Osdisk that you can buy a disk from:
http://www.osdisc.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi/index.html

You should also be able to download the ISO and burn a disk yourself. It's not too difficult. If you check the ISO after you've downloaded it:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM
and burn the disk at the slowest possible speed you should be fine.

7.04 is well past its use-by date. You shouldn't have too much trouble installing the new version, but the good folks here and people like the Loco teams will help you if you need it.

You should back up all your important data before you proceed with the new install. Do boot off the LiveCD first and make sure it works on your computer, and that you have internet access etc with it just in case you need help with the installation.

the ubuntu download page gives very specific but simple steps on how to install the software.

Can you help with this problem?
