ASUS PC1015PX - fail to install/load Ubuntu 11.10 and 10.4

Asked by huw morgan

My new ASUS 1015PX has the usual Windows on the SDA1 partition - 100Gb, followed by SDA2 - 15Gb - as the recovery partition for Windows, and SDA3 with 183Gb for windows drive D:\ . ASUS uses SDA4 - 19Mb for it's own use.

I am trying to load Ubuntu onto the SDA3 partition to run alongside windows.

11.10 on an USB will load Ubuntu on a try basis and it seems OK, but every time I attempt an install, Ubuntu quickly shuts down and the reboot / restart process begins. This repeats endlessly. During my attempt to load 11.10, I notice that on the page which offers 3 options of loading, the first in the list includes the statement 'install INSIDE windows...' whereas the on line help shows 'install ALONGSIDE windows...'. (my caps for emphasis) I have double checked that I am using the correct download - not the install within windows option. Is this an indicator of a problem in the loader routine? Had no problems at all loading 10.10 alongside XP on an old laptop last year.

I have looked at the 3rd option where I specify the partition to be used but I do not have the experience required.

I've also tried 10.04 Netbook Remix but that will not boot at all with the machine reporting: -

unknown keyword in config file gfxboot
vesamenu.c32: not a COM32R image.

I am aware of the wubi option, but am not interested in running Ubuntu within windows.

DId you MD5 test the ISO you put on the USB?
DId you test your RAM using the memtest on the liveCD when it first starts to boot?

Hi actionparsnip

Sorry. I am not proficient and do not even understand your question! I am using an USB and not a CD.

More information. I just found a thread on this topic where Stuart Langridge provides a way through loading 10.4. This involves typing 'help' when the unknown keyword in config file gfxboot vesamenu.c32: not a COM32R image message comes up. Hit 'enter' and it happily fires up and allows me to try 10.4. However, when I try to install, I get as far as prepare disk space which gives me two options: 'erase and use entire disk' - which I do not want to do....and 'specify partitions manually'

In trying the latter, I hit my brick wall. What do I need to enter here? In attempting to edit SDA3 I am presented with:

New partition size in Mb what should I enter here?

Use as drop down menu - what do I choose here?

Format the partition tick the box or what?

Mount point again a drop down menu with choice of /, /boot, ...etc.., /usr/local
                                                                                             which one here

This is as far as I have got. Anything else ahead of me? Please note that I have already re formatted SDA3 to ext4.

thanks

Finally managed to get 11.10 onto the netbook. As a matter of interest this is the path I had to follow:

Using 10.04 on the USB, and Gparted:

Delete SDA3 (the windows D drive)
Add New SDA3 partition as Extended
Add New partition SDA5 as Ext4
Add New partition SDA6 as swap

On the next attempt to install 10.04, the loader picked up on SDA3 being available and completed successfully. Unfortunately I could not get comms to work at all. Gave up on this and tried the 11.10 USB again to install, as I had previously had no comms problems when running on the try basis off the USB. This ran through to completion without any problems at all. It had given me the option of either upgrading the 10.04 it found on the SDA3 or clean new install. I chose the latter as I have experienced failures every time I have I tried to upgrade.

Comms OK, everything working fine.

It seems that my original failure with the 11.10 in try mode shutting down and restarting every time I tried to install may have been down to all 4 possible primary partitions already in use. I think that I would have been able to install it directly if I had first of all used Gparted to sort out SDA3 as described above.
