I downloaded ubuntu OS but did not keep my Windows OS how do I partition and keep Ubuntu while Downloading a fresh windows OS

Having had some problems using some software which only operates successfully with my old Wins OS I have decided to purchase and download a new Windows OS but I would still like to keep Ubuntu. How do I partition my system so I can retain Ubuntu

You can boot to liveCD after running a full backup of your data. You can resize the Ext4 partition and make space for the new OS. Install the Windows OS to the free space as usual. You will then need to boot to the Ubuntu liveCD again to reinstate the bootloader as the windows installer will blindly overwrite grub

I neglected to say in my original question that I am using a netbook and dont have a built in disc writer can this be done with a usb flashdrive?
