i liked the GUI from 9.10 how can i return it?

You can't downgrade. Remember that Ubuntu 9.10 is no longer supported:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29#Releases

this means that you will not receive update/support etc.

Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) was great and had some useful features, like the count down to restart etc., and i liked the collours...

guess i will have to re install from cd.. pitty it is no longer supported

11.04 provides, if you select it, the old GUI.
You can also roll back to 10.04.3 LTS, which will be supported until 2013-04
The latest solution is to switch to Mint 12 which was a derivate of Ubuntu, and is still closed. It proposes both old Gnome 2.3 GUI (your one) and Gnome 3 (like new Unity).
