Server 6.06LTS to 10.04LTS via 8.04LTS unable to upgrade

Asked by Kevin

The procedures provided by Ubuntu documentation no longer works to upgrade from 6.06LTS to the latest LTS (10.04) for the server edition of Ubuntu. Since both 6.06 and 8.04 are both in old-release and all of the upgrade procedures no longer work.

Both do-upgrade fails, it attempts to download lucid upgrade files, and errors out. Cdrom upgrade fails with unknown server type.

Is there any known way to upgrade correctly from 6.06 to 10.04 via 8.04 without having to build a new box and re-setup everything?

neither of those versions are supported anymore. you need to download 10.04 and do a complete install. if you don't want to lose any of your data, you'll need to backup everything in your /home directory by copying it to a different partition or onto a cd before you install 10.04.

Hmm, that's no good. As this is a server setup and has significant customization for the services that it is providing. It is not a desktop implementation which home directories could just be backed-up.
