you need to edit the grub and delete the partition in case you have a separate partition for the old install.

-make (or find where you stored it) a Ubuntu CD
-boot on Ubuntu 11.10
- Ctrl+T to open terminal
-terminal: sudo apt-get install gparted
--terminal: gksudo gparted
-remove 11.04 partition via gparted
-terminal: sudo update-grub
-terminal: sudo reboot

If reboot fails, reinstall Grub2: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling_GRUB2 (I prefer chroot method)
