Looks bad. Could you provide partition table: https://answers.launchpad.net/grub/+faqs

if the PC came pre-installed with vista, just restart and press f11 at the BIOS screen. it is auto recovery option in most of the PC models. if you have created recovery disks, restart your PC with the recovery disk in the drive. if you have deleted the recovery partition and not even made the recovery disks, just install equivalent version of windows and register it using the genuine product key, which can be found back side of the laptop or if it is a desktop, then at the top of CPU.

Hi all,

I tried using F11 as as my PC was pre-installed with Vista with no improvement & i also did not created any recovery disk.

Ubuntu 8.10 was installed successfully on my laptop, I installed Ubuntu step wise as per instructions from the DVD i.e. creating restore point, creating partition etc. but when i rebooted my PC there was was no vista, only the following options are there:

Ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.27-7-generic
Ubuntu 8.10 kernel 2.6.27-7-generic(recovery mode)
Ubuntu 8.10 memtest86+

For your information my partition table displays the following:

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo<command>".
See "man sudo_root"for details.

Thanks

it seems like your ubuntu used the entire hard disk for installation.
you can very well install windows vista from a dvd and register it using
the genuine license that came with the pc ( look for a microsoft sticker
at the back of laptop). there is another option- just order a pair of
recovery disks from the pc manufacturer. after the vista is installed,
be careful if u want to install ubuntu again in a dual os mode.

Can you help with this problem?
