Can I install and run Ubuntu under VMWare player?

I want to have Ubuntu and Windows on the same machine and the perspective of dual boot does not seem good because in any moment I may need both. Is possible to install and run Ubuntu under Windows XP and VMware player? Is this a better solution than Ubuntu for Windows? I am getting a virus alert when downloading the Windows installer and that is an additional reason to stay away from it.

Most probably false positive.You can try ubuntu in Virtual box.

Yes you can use the CD in vmware and install the OS. Another option is virtualbox

So which is better Ubuntu for Windows, Ubuntu in VWware player, or Ubuntu in Virtualbox? I want to run GNU radio DSP software in Ubuntu. Will that be significantly slower in these VMs than Ubuntu by itself.

Ubuntu in vmware or virtualbox will run fairly similarly if you are just trialing the OS. If you need native USB access then use the proprietary virtualbox 4.1 and not the opensource one.

The virtualisation will mean both OSes run in parallel so unless you have a fairly decent system it will make both slow down.

The only big issue in virtualization is 3D graphic for games.

Since I think you want to try Ubuntu to see how it work not to playing games on it 3D graphic for games is not issue.Every OS is slower in Vbox or any other virtual machine then installed on HD,because in virtual machine OS use just a part of your ram.Give it a try in Vbox.
