wont goto login after loading boot up screen

Asked by jeremy menard

After boot up it goes through the screen with Ubuntu symbol and the 5 dots then goes to a purple screen that has time and date at the top. In the center there is a gray box with a pc then below it there are words that switch back and forth from ubuntu and Ubuntu 11.04 when i click. I cant login but can goto terminal by hitting ctrl alt f1. What can i do to fix this?

I found the same thing with 11.04 until it was updated. Get to the console with <ctrl><alt><F1> and log in. You won't see any feedback on the screen when you type your password. Just type it correctly and press enter and you should be logged in.

Make sure that your wired interned is plugged into the computer and do the following:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

This should update all of the packages to current release levels. There will be a several hundred megabytes of updates to get.

Alternatively, you might like to download the latest release, 11.10 Oneiric and try installing that instead.

Was this an upgrade, or was it a new install?

Login and try

sudo apt-get -f install

If that works, retry the previous line above. If you get an error message try to tell us what it says: it might give a better clue as to what is going on.
