When I reboot my computer with the Linux Ubuntu 11.10 disc in the drive, nothing happens.

Asked by David Campanella

When I place the Linux Ubuntu 11.10 disc in the drive of my HP pavilion laptop, A popup shows up asking me to run wubi.exe. Then it asks for me to allow Ubuntu to make changes to my computer. Yes to that, It then asks me if I want to run Ubuntu from the CD or install it to my computer. Choosing run from cd, The message says I need to reboot my computer. When I reboot my computer with the CD in the drive without pressing any buttons, nothing happens. When I reboot the computer and press several function keys, again, nothing happens. I want to be able to boot my computer from the disc and use Linux Ubuntu 11.10 on my laptop.

Typically it is necessary to press a specific key as your computer starts up, to bring up a boot menu, in which you select the boot device. In this menu, you would select your CD drive. The way this is done depends on your computer, but is usually the same for different computers produced by the same manufacturer. To bring up this menu on most (or perhaps all) Dell computers, for example, you would press F2. You would have to press it when prompted to do so. Somewhere on the screen, as you start your computer, you will be told what key to press for this. On a few computers, this option might not exist; in that case, you would have to press the key to enter the BIOS setup (also displayed on the screen very soon after you power on your computer), and change the default boot order there.

If you are doing this but the CD will still not boot, then it is likely that the CD itself is bad. You should check the MD5 sum of the .iso image you used to create it (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM and note that, since https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes has not yet been updated to include the MD5 hashes for Ubuntu 11.10, you'll have to use http://releases.ubuntu.com/oneiric/MD5SUMS instead). You should also make sure you are burning the CD correctly (mounting the .iso image and copying the files is not adequate, nor is copying the .iso file itself to the CD--you must burn it to the CD as an .iso image); see the instructions at http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download (use "Show Me How" in Step 2). You should burn the CD as slowly as possible, as this minimizes the chance of errors in the burning process.

If the above advice does not enable you to solve the problem, please post a reply describing that happened when you tried the above suggestions.
