Problem accesing Hard-disk

Asked by SantoshP

Hi,
Windows was not able to boot from hard disk so I installed UBuntu from USB. It got installed but I am not able to see my C or D drives or any data in those drives. Is my hard disk crashed? How can I recover the data on those drives?

Do you hear any sound, like a clicking sound or anything when you first start the computer?
If you managed to install Ubuntu to it, I would guess it's not that broken.

What output do you get if you type "fdisk -l" in the terminal?

Why do you not have a backup??????

The 'drives' are most likely partitions which Windows incorrectly calls drives. You can have 1 drive and partition it into 2 and Windows will see a 'c drive' and a 'd drive' which is incorrect, there is one drive with 2 partitions.

Can you give the output of:

sudo fdisk -l; lsb_release -a

Thanks

Yes, I hear a clicking sound when I start my comupter. I couldn't install Ubuntu on the hard disk. I am running it on USB. When I tried to install on hard disk it said not enough memory. So I am guessing it is not accessing or recognizing the disk.

Also, what do you mean by terminal? I am new to Ubuntu so don't know how to write commands. Help!!

You can access the terminal by pressing ctrl + alt + t.

However, it seems the hard drive is damaged.
There is a few things you could try to recover the data, but the drive needs changing for you to use the computer.

If you desperately need to rescue your files you could check out this article: http://geekyprojects.com/storage/how-to-recover-data-even-when-hard-drive-is-damaged/
