fresh 11.10 install stuck at "loading boot logo"

Asked by murthy

I have a brand new lenovo desktop with fresh 1TB SATA HDD.

I popped in the 11.10 install CD and restarted the PC.

It starts the installation and is always getting stuck at "Loading boot logo ...."

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as possible?

You are absolutely right...

I made another disc from a different machine using NERO and it worked like a charm.

thanks for helping out.

No probs dude, I always ask the same things and its usually because people have burned at 1000x speed. Its not good for CDs you intend to boot from and only save about 60 seconds of time.

Faster != better

Hi,

I have a Macbookpro 8,1 and I encounter the very same problem.
* md5sum on ISO is OK.
* disc burnt in 8x (I have no access to writer slower than that).

I can tell from web reviews that other people with same machine as mine installed it without problem though...
To your knowledge, I have the same problem with USB sticks and with other linux distro so I guess it's not specific to ubuntu but still I can't find the problem.

- I tried both regular ISO and +mac ISO.

thanks in advances for providing me leads.

delance, as stated in my message:

* ISO integrity is OK
* I can't check CD integrity using that doc since it won't boot that far.

Anyway I found the problem late yesterday. The problem is due to me having an SSD as primary/EFI drive.
I found a workaround (using some efi ubuntu loader found on the Internet) but wonder if I should open a bug regarding that issue.

What do you think?

I would appreciate you raise a bug, because I'm seeing more and more questions about GPT partitions and EFI boot. As I have not such configuration, it's hard to reproduce and so to help. And it should be fixed by programmer, not people like me.

Running into the same issue over here....md5 sum check out (have redownloaded ~3 times to be sure that it wasn't a fluke), burned a handful of disk on various burners/speeds with out any (reported) errors. But when I put it in my 8,1 mbp it refuses to boot, just hanging on the Loading bootlogo.... line. Out of curiosity I put my boot disk into my work computer and it booted past the initial grub menu and booted the kernel. After waiting a while I presses the esc to see what was going on...there were many squashfs errors, and then there were about 4 services that failed to start. It never completely booted, but hung, presumably when it was trying to start the window manager. I tried verifying the disk on my work computer and there were no errors found. Definitely seems like a bug to me. Has anyone filed a bug report yet? If not I can.

Never mind about the bug report question. I just missed the link earlier, and managed to find it right after I posted, go figure. :P
