Can't get rid of Grub

Asked by Ken

Greetings All.

I have Ubuntu on one half of a partitioned drive and Xubuntu on the other. I have Grub controlling access at boot time.

I would like to remove Xubuntu from my system completely and I'd like to get rid of Grub and revert to standard, single system boot. How can I best achieve this?

I have tried simply removing Xubuntu but, at boot-time, I'm told "Couldn't find file" (or words to that effect) and was left at a flashing cursor with no idea as to how to proceed.

A little help would be HUGELY appreciated!

Thanks.

Ken.

I have, with lots of help, gotten rid of Xubuntu and now have access to my system. Sadly, at boot time Grub requires input from me even though there are no other systems installed.

If you cannot access Ubuntu, then try by running a LiveCD, then opening a Terminal, and typing update-grub.

Hi Jose. Tried that and it did not work but I did, however, find a solution. A power user in the family gave me the following....

Go to a terminal and type

sudo fdisk /dev/sda

Then type p and press enter

Press q and enter to get out

sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda

There was a warning message but I ignored it and went ahead exactly as instructed. Unfortunately I have no idea what it all means but I can tell you that it sorted my problem out. Grub no longer requires input from me.

All I have to do now is inform this forum that my problem is solved.
