New desktop configuration compatibility

Asked by andcoe

Hi. I'm going to buy a new desktop configurated by me. The only issue is that i don't know wich components are ubuntu compatible. My configuration is the following:

CPU: INTEL CORE i3 2100 (3.1GHZ) SKT 1155
Motherboard: ASUS P8H67-M PRO REV 3.0
Ram: KINGSTON KIT 4GB DDR3 1333MHZ
Hard Drive: SEAGATE 500GB SATA III 16MB

I accept sugestions for changing some parts if something is not compatible. I realy need a quick answer to buy a machine because i've got some projects that can't wait.

thanks for helping

I guess that this hardware works well, but you haven't specified any graphic card. Usually is the component that can be more problematic. I suggest to you to use nvidia, anyway. This will help you:
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/285.05.09/README/supportedchips.html

hi Enrico, first of all thanks for the help.

The reason i haven't specified the graphics card it's beacause the asus motherboard as one "onboard" that meets my requirements.

Can you tell me where did you searched to be that sure? I'm not doubting you, I'm asking this because i need to be sure that all components will work properly with ubuntu. It's a responsible thing i will spend some money on it.

Thanks again.

andcoe,

if no official documentation either from the HW manufacturer or Canonical can guarantee it is supported,
I would still try to hit it with a Ubuntu test install. (there's nothing to lose anyway)

If the installation completes with no problems, check the messages files /var/log, dmesg, lspci, lshw, dmidecode for any issues.

Make a backup copy of the current OS instance first!

Best regards.

svens,

This configuration doesn't come with any OS (clean). The only problem is that if the ubuntu doesn't work, probably i'will have to install some other OS , like windows :( ... I really like ubuntu, i've been using it for some time.

Fedora is an option too.
Unless you are an advanced user and really like the terminal, there won't be any change for you.

I found a similar configuration on openbenchmarking.org (link below)

Usually an OS don't have problem with CPU, RAM or HD. For the motherboard I've simply googled and I haven't found problem.

Can you help with this problem?
