Why do you not a have a backup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you give the output of:

What if your drive motor fails, where is your data then? I am absolutely astounded.

STOP BOOTING FROM HARD DISK. It could prevent you to recover pictures.
Boot on Ubuntu CD/USB key, and choose "Try".

Where were your pictures (which folder) ?
Could you see them in one of two mounted partitions ?
How exactly did you reinstall 11.04: by manually changing partition schema, by an automatic option, ....?

If you run:

sudo mkdir /media/sda1; sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/sda1; sudo mkdir /media/sda5; sudo mount /dev/sda5 /media/sda5

Again, why is there no backup??

If you open /media in nautilus, you can then access both partitions
