Trying to install Ubuntu on my old Gateway computer

I am trying to download Ubuntu on my old Gateway computer. My old computer has XP which is not working. I get an error 32 message that says that system files are missing. When I place the CD with Ubuntu in the disk drive nothing happens. I still get the same windows error message. I downloaded Ubuntu to disk - its a DVD R CD - Is that Ok. What caI do???

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
Did you burn the CD as slowly as possible?

I am so clueless when it comes to computer technology. Can you tell me how to test the ISO?

Is bios set to boot from CD drive instead hard drive?

Did you burn ISO file on CD as a ISO image and not usual file ?
