will ubuntu 11.04 run on a low end computer?

Asked by yakub

i have an old compaq presario that has about 248 mb ram. I was thinking about upgrading to win 7 but sadly i need 1gb of ram. The thing is that windows xp on it is terrible and slow! takes about 5 minutes just to load Firefox! so is Ubuntu a good alt, or will i have to stick with old slow win XP?

Yes, install Lubuntu Natty and it will suit your low end system.

You will probably want to Gnome the default desktop as Unity will be very slow on a PC with that little memory. But that's easy just select "Ubuntu Classic' from the log on menu. Otherwise should be fine.

Unity uses Gnome as it's deksktop, Unity is only a shell which run INSIDE Gnome. Gnome on 248Mb RAM will crawl at a snails pace, LXDE which is the default DE in Lubuntu is a much better choice for the hardware

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

States 512Mb is the MINIMUM to run Gnome well, whereas if you scroll downit states that Lubuntu will run on 256Mb RAM...

You could have a look at Slitaz, but Lubuntu and Xubuntu should work.

Can you help with this problem?
