You will need to boot to maverick install CD, format the current ubuntu partition and reinstall Maverick

(format the current ubuntu partition) what does that mean? will I lose my folders do I have to save them some where first?

You should have a regular backup of what you have so this should not be an issue. Run a final backup then boot to liveCD and reinstall. You can delete the partitions currently holding Ubuntu then install to the unallocated space

As said by actionparsnip the only way to get back to Ubuntu 10 is to reinstall it and this will mean losing everything from the hard disk. So make sure you back-up all your data first.

However, what desktop are you using? The default for Ubuntu 11 is Unity. This is much more resource hungry then Gnome and can cause problems on older machines that are slower and have less memory than more modern PCs

You could try selecting Gnome as the desktop. When you login select "Ubuntu Classic" If this works for you then alls well and good.
Otherwise its time for a fresh install I'm afraid.

I tried Ubuntu Classic did not help. Yes my computer is older. what would happen if I put in another hard-drive? Would that help? There is room and there is a plug-in for one.
What happens when you do have two hard-drives what is the advantage of having two?

Do you plan to reinstall on a fresh new disk and plug the older disk as second in boot order ?
In this case, you could copy directly /home directory from old disk to new one after installation.
During installation, you should make a dedicated partition for /home folder, so next time you will install a new distribution (an Ubuntu one or a not Ubuntu one), you will not have to save /home.
Don't hesitate to ask data before doing anything.

yes I just have to wait till tomorrow to get a disk. to bad there is not a way to just go back to10.10 or put info it the terminal to make it drop back to the older format. like uninstall 11.4 go back to 10.10. I find it odd that I have to restart with a disk. You would think there was a easer way to just go back one install to the older one, if one dose not like the changes.

oh no! you said the (W) word lalalalala. maybe someone should think about setting up somthing, (a program?) to move back one install. It would take a lot of work, I think. I thank you for all your info and time you are good!

Hi Bob,

As said by actionparsnip is the Only way to get back the 10.10 by Format hence this will not mean losing your all data. Go here to know the Way for format & get the data without backup.

Just install the 10.10 using live CD,on the partitioning stage it show the Partion which you already done, just now you need to specify the Partition which is root ( / ) ,which is Swap area and which one is home folder by modify that existing Partition and please note after modifying highlight the format for root Partition only and not for home folder if you select format option for home folder you can't get your old data..

After completion you get the 10.10 and you can get you old data's in home in the name of existing folder & you can get it by copy in to your current home.

Hope it helps you if not ?????????..

Emerald has not been coded for for YEARS. It is dead! If you press ALT+F2 and run:

compiz --replace

Is it better, have you also tried Ubuntu Classic desktop. Your GPU is renowned for flickering and glitchiness. They are VERY touchy when it comes to timings and very prone to lockups.

is it never had flickering or glitches before. I am on classic now
it got to here and stoped is that the end? I thought it would end with (oem@bob-desktop:~$)
