Will you use the computer with internet? If yes you should use an update system and ubuntu 7.10 isn't the right choice. There are a lot of light distro for older PC. Please specify your hardware and we will help you.

Your problems installing Ubuntu 11.04 on your laptop might not be because your laptop is too old--have you checked the disc for defects?

Also, please note that Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Ubuntu 10.10 are both still supported, and they may run better than Ubuntu 11.04 on newer hardware, though Ubuntu 10.10 will not be supported for as long as Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Ubuntu 11.04.

Finally, please note that Xubuntu (http://xubuntu.org/) and Lubuntu (http://lubuntu.net/) are lighter-weight than regular Ubuntu and may be more suitable for running on old hardware.

If you have trouble installing, please provide more info on your hardware. This may help fixing your problem or can help us suggest otheralternatives.

I suggest to you to use Puppy Linux:
http://www.goosee.com/puppy/

But consider that you can run xubuntu too on this version without problem, here is the site:
http://www.xubuntu.org/

Remember I'm a real novice and have only used windows until now

1) With the *buntus there are TWO different install disks. The Desktop disk needs 300Mb+ to install. It is doing two jobs, it is being a LiveCD and it is installing. The Alternate disk is just an install disk, it only needs 64Mb to put in.

So...if you have a *buntu Desktop disk you are never going to be able to install it in that laptop.

2) Look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightweight_Linux_distribution . It's a bit dated. It suggests that Lubuntu only needs 128Mb. BUT you need the Alternate disk and not the Desktop disk.

3) You cannot add heavyweight apps on a lightweight distro. It will increase the load and drag your system down.

Arochester
Do you mean the Ubuntu will never load or both Ubuntu and Puppy 5.2.8 will never load?
What should I get next - I've already bought two CDs!!! This is proving to be much more complicated than I'd imagined!

With those specs you are will get nowhere with Ubuntu. The minimum spec requirements of Puppy have crept up. According to http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=63547 :
"RAM recommendations
64MB RAM -- Bare minimum
Recommend turning off ROX-Filer, just use JWM, no extra applets,
background apps, use full installation, keep multi-tasking down, no
wallpaper, when using SeaMonkey, keep number of open tabs down. Also
needs a paging (swap) device.
128MB RAM -- Practical Minimum
User should use care with multi-tasking, needs a paging (swap) device.
Full install on fast media would be better install option.
256MB RAM -- Desirable Minimum
User should be happy with 'normal' computing, whatever that means.
Paging device highly recommended. "

...So it should run, but not quickly.

You should look at DSL (Damn Small Linux) instead or POSSIBLY Slitaz (I am still not sure about the Wireless ability of Slitaz)

(There is an interesting post just now at http://askubuntu.com/questions/61445/is-there-a-variant-of-ubuntu-that-comes-with-none-of-the-bundled-software ---but that will result in next to nothing at 80-90m of RAM)

I have now purchased my third cd Tiny Core Linux
Same things happen
Initial signs of activity then a black screen.
Is there somebody who could give me a step by step guide for an absolute dummy

You can't really buy tinycore as its not sellable, you can buy CDs for very little but the OS itself is 100% free. If you can tell us your video chip, we can advise. Or the make and model of the system if it has one

If the system has a make and model you can give us that and we can websearch, or if you have an OS on there currently you can find out using that..

Have you tried the boot option:

nomodeset

may help. You could also install Ubuntu using the alternate installer (installs in text mode)

Tried it
Now looking at black screen with flashing cursor?
Nomodeset didn't appear in list of boot options?

actionparsnip (andrew-woodhead666) said :

A common kernel (boot)parameter is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot into a black screen or show corrupted splash screen. See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132 on how to use this parameter

Would I be better upgrading RAM and using Ubuntu 11??
Or is the big problem the graphics card???
