does ubuntu support my hardware

Asked by Peter Warasila

I have a server, and I really don't feel like investing in Windows Server 2008 R2, so I was going to try and install ubuntu, but as it stands, my barebones kit says that it doesn't support anything other than windows and RedHat. Is there any chance that I still can install it? I would much like to save a few hundred bucks.

As many (most?) machines in the server sector run some form of linux, and hardware support is built into the kernel, it is most likely that your machine is supported.

However, you have not given us any information whatsoever regarding your hardware, so its quite hard to say. As always, I would suggest that you try booting it to a live session, and having a play.

Note that redhat and ubuntu use the same core kernel, i.e. the linux kernel. There are modifications that are specific to redhat, but they are few and far between.

Further note that redhat does offer both paid and unpaid systems as well (the unpaid version is known as CentOS).

What hardware does it have? Most is supported out of the box or with a little work. The fact that Redhat is mentioned is a good sign.
