New to Ubuntu, Quest. about try from CD.

Asked by Kenny Parsons

I currently run Mac OS X 10.6.8 on my macbook but i have always heard very highly of Ubuntu. Before i try Ubuntu 11.04 from a CD, i would like to know if anything i download will be saved to the cd or will it be saved to a spot on my mac. If anybody familiar with mac osx can help i would really appreciate this.

The liveCD and changes within the liveCD are saved in a ramdrive and are lost on reboot. It has noting to do with your installed OS. The CD is a WORM media (Write once read many) so nothing will be saved to the CD in the live environment.

Is this what you mean?

yes. Is there a way to save changes, or files downloaded to the cd (dvd actually) or to a file on my mac.

You could have a partition (or file) to store your settings etc, you could mount it after you log in to the liveCD and make the settings apply. If you use a USB stick instead you can have a persistent area of the remainder of the USB stick after 1Gb gets used for the install system and changes will stick automatically.

Could you tell me how to do make a partition and how to apply these settings?

You would need to resize your mac partitions and I don't know much about Macs (my intelligence outweighs my wallet) and I'm not sure if MacOS likes that sort of thing. You may be able to make a file on your HFS+ partition (again, unsure of Linux's ability to acess that) and mount it after you log in. All in all it's very messy with a crappy read only CD. If you grab a 2Gb USB stci or SD card (which cost less than a pack of smokes) you will have an easier life
