11.04 no longer boots

Asked by Brian Rippie

I just set up 11.04 on a dedicated machine (no other OS, just Ubuntu) and the setup process went fine. Typical LAMP server. I rebooted a couple times after removing the install CD and had no problem. I installed SSH and then shutdown the machine to move it to a new location. When I went to power it back on, the PC states that it is unable to boot up - that I should insert boot media. The bios is set to boot first from hard drive, then CD. This was working and stopped. I used the CD in rescue mode and am able to access the file system.

Very little has been installed - Apache, PHP and MySQL via the installer and then SSH after. That's really it. I hate to lose my configuration settings though and I fear this could happen again. The hard drive is brand new, but I suppose it *could* have gone bad (I can access the drive when I mount root from rescue mode).

Any ideas?
