Can you boot from LiveCD?

Upgrading via update-manager is not obvious, and reliable.
You can firstly try to reinstall Grub2, if failure occurred at end of installation: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Copy%20LiveCD%20Files
Else you will have to install 10.04.3 from the CD or USB stick. In this case, do you have a dedicated /home partition or not? If you have a dedicated partition for /home. Choose manual partitioning. Else you will have to backup /home folder via a Live Session.

I use only one system and that is Ubuntu. I had originally installed from a Live CD 8.04 and was upgrading through net (without a Live CD of 10.4) when the system was broken due to power failure during installation. Regards.

Do you know on what partitions (e.g. /dev/sda1) your system installed?

Yes, I understood, albeit a little later that you had given a link which I needed to go through. I did it but I was not able to login as sudo as I had reported at the very outset. However, currently I have used the Live CD method as I was lucky enough to find an earlier misplaced Live CD 10.4. However, I need to learn the command line as I may need to rescue my system in future as well. Now, I am well nigh sure that my system will be OK once the updates(which are being downloaded while I am writing this) are installed. I will come back again to this platform to thank Maxim Petrov and olivier delance.
To Maxim Petrov : My system uses two partitions sda1 and sda5(swap). Regards.

Then try run this commands in terminal

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
sudo mount -t proc none /mnt/proc
sudo mount -t sysfs none /mnt/sys
sudo chroot /mnt
apt-get install -f

Can you help with this problem?
