Does the Dell laptop on the front-page support Ubuntu?

Asked by A. Bram Neijt

Seeing the Dell laptop on the front-page of ubuntu.com, I bought a Dell laptop thinking it would be supported by Ubuntu.

However, using the laptop with Ubuntu has not been a pleasant experience because the touchpad is very sensitive and there is no support for it in Ubuntu[1]. This means that I can not disable the touchpad while typing or disable the click on touch behaviour. This results in me clicking on things while I'm typing.

This leads to the question: does the laptop on the ubuntu.com front-page even support Ubuntu? Because it could be that I have bought the wrong version of the same laptop, but my fear is that the laptop shown on the front-page also has an ALPS touchpad and also is not supported by Ubuntu.

For me it's
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 10.10
Release: 10.10
Codename: maverick

As the bug report shows, there is no version of Ubuntu available that supports the ALPS touchpad.

My laptop is a Dell Latitude E6510. I do not know what the exact model on the front-page of ubuntu.com is.

Ok, I guess I can conclude that the Dell laptop on the front page of Ubuntu has the same problems as I have. I think it's false advertising because you show me a laptop for which the hardware is not supported by Ubuntu.

For me it's settled. Answer: no, the Dell laptop portrayed on the front page of Ubuntu.com does not support Ubuntu.
