Windows Vista and Ubuntu 11.04

Asked by Rod Williams

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a IBM ThinkPad. Now when I start the PC it will only go to Ubuntu. When I do Alt-Ctr-Del and choose launch vista, I get a blue scree and it defaults back to Ubuntu. I cannot do anything in Ubuntu because I have no knowledge and at this point I would like to delete Ubuntu and get my laptop back to what it was before.

Also, How would I get to the command line in order to type something?

Try:

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get -y install os-prober; sudo os-prober; sudo update-grub

Reboot to test

Did you install inside windows (using Wubi) or did you resize your NTFS partition and install a true dualboot?

I installed inside windows using Wubi. I will try the sudo apt, I just have trouble find the display area.

Did all of the above commands. Still cannot get windows Vista to come up. When I did reboot I tried to get windows. I do get a blue screen but it disappears to fast to read.

With Wubi there are two menus usually - the first displays Vista and Ubuntu - and the second will be the grub menu. Do you see both of these menus?

Or did you set the default OS to Ubuntu (from windows) and also set the time to display OSes to zero?

The first and only menu that comes up is GNU Grus. Ubuntu is listed at top followed by Ubuntu safe mode, Ubuntu previous editions, 2 memory tests, and finally Vista. If I start Vist, I get a menu to start in safe mode, regular mode, etc. Whichever I chooses, I get a "blue screen" that I know included the words "error". It disappears to quickly to read entirely.

The other questions I don't know the answer to; but I can assume that I did not make those changes.

Okay so you're not using Wubi. You have a direct install. I recommend running the bootinfoscript:
http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/

Post results to http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/ and don't forget to return
the pastebin address here.

That should give a clearer picture about what is going on. In general though, if your Windows is blue screening then you probably need to boot a windows repair CD and repair it. (This will remove the grub bootloader so you'll need an Ubuntu CD to reinstall grub2 afterwards).

Anyway... do the bootinfoscript first and that should make the next step clear.
