Lock up during install 11.04

Asked by Matthew Hawk

I started to install Ubuntu 11.04 on my Presario V2000. I has the following: AMD Turion 64 mobile ML, 1600MHz processor speed, 1024 MB memory, with an 80 gig HD.

When I first started the install, I only had about 1.5 gigs available on the system, but halfway through realized I needed to have more space. I received an error message (something about error 127 maybe), but thought if I wipe the HD i would be fine to install later.

I wiped the HD with DBAN, and now am trying to install 11.04 again. Now the disc runs, but stays on the "Ubuntu" screen with 5 dots below it that change from orange to white and back to orange. I let this go for 12 hours, and still no change. I end up starting over...I have done this now 3 different times, and even ran DBAN again.

Anything I can do? I did run Linux Puppy 5.2.5 and that seemed to work fine, but I wanted to install Ubuntu as I couldn't figure out how to get puppy on the HD.

I am just starting to use Linux (never done anything like this before), and am truly a noob on this stuff, so if you can explain it to me like you are talking to your grandma that would help me!!!

THANK YOU ALL IN ADVANCE FOR YOU HELP!!!

Though barely, it does appear your system should meet the minimum requirements. Do you have any other operating system on this computer?

I forgot to mention that during the first install, I had XP on the laptop, and got to the part where I was able to tell Ubuntu what type of keyboard I have and some other choices, but I think I ran out of room and that was why I had the error message I did (again, I didn't save it as I thought that I could install once I wiped the HD). I wiped the HD, so now don't have an OS on the laptop.

Eric, I do not have another OS on right now...a blank screen when I power on the laptop, with a blinking dash on the upper left corner. I can press esc, f10 or f12 (esc to choose how to boot, f10 for setup, and f12 for choose how to boot).

So you pop in the disc, and boot up. But then you can't even get to the part where it asks if you want to try or install?

that is correct...it shows a couple of icons near the bottom of the page, then it goes to the "ubuntu" screen with the dots...

also, this laptop is for me to play on, I have a different laptop for home use, and start school next month (system admin for computers) and will have a new laptop for school, so I am not super worried on this, but would love to have ubuntu after researching...

Did you burn a CD to boot from, if so did you burn it as slowly as possible?
Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?

It sound like the issue might be with the disc. I would try creating a 10.04 install disc, and see if you can boot up/install that. You can then easily upgrade to 11.04 with the Update Manager.
Go here, and choose 10.04 LTS in the Download Options:

I burned the iso onto a disc, but just ran it normal speed. How do you MD5 test? Again, I am a big noob...

I did burn 10.04 and that did the same thing...stays on that screen. I forgot to mention that earlier!!! Sorry!

That's fine, I'm not sure how to MD5 test though. Best of luck.

Instead of asking how to MD5 test, why not research yourself? This will make you more autonomous as wel as get you fixed faster as you will not be waiting for others to give advise.

You would have EASILY found guides like this:

Please refer to installation index.

To play and not beeing super worried, try AlternateCD, it's advanced, but has more outputs to learn about.

> 80 gig HD

Have a plan ready about partition table.

Unity sys requirements.

Otherwise there is Gnome2 classic session or install unity-2d which after installation is also available from session menu.
