Specify kernel during install process

Asked by Graham Zulauf

It was mentioned that the 10.04.2 DVD installation media contains the option to use the Maverick (10.10) kernel for the install process.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/717388/comments/10

How can I specify the use of the 10.10 kernel for the install process (in order to take advantage of a bug fix) of 10.04?

Thank you.

Boot from the DVD (either from a disc burned from the DVD .iso image, or a USB flash drive written from the that same .iso). A text-based screen gives you the opportunity to select your language, and counts down seconds (when it gets to zero, it will automatically boot with the defaults, which is *not* what you want in this case). After selecting your language, you'll see a menu that looks like http://s4.postimage.org/4l23tdzet/install_ubuntu_2_6_35_kernel.png. Select "Install Ubuntu (2.6.35 kernel)".

Eliah-

I attempted to boot from the "ubuntu-10.04.2-dvd-amd64.iso" image but was not shown the option for an alternate kernel. Is it possible that it only exists on the x86 media? If so, is there a way to manually force it to use the alternate kernel on the x64 10.04.2 media?

I think the missing menu item is a bug.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-cdimage/+bug/730764

I'll try the workaround.

It seems like there is no usable workaround in bug 730764.

"The problem here is that the server preseed file overrides the kernel selection in the maverick-kernel initrd, and there isn't a suitable maverick-kernel variant of the preseed file."

Any ideas?

Lucid's third point release (Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS) has just come out. You can download it using one of the links provided at http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/alternative-download#dvd (just was was previously the case with 10.04.2 LTS.). You may want to download it via torrent instead (.torrent files are available alongside the DVD .iso images on the download mirrors, or equivalently at http://torrent.ubuntu.com:6969/).

Does this problem still occur, using an Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS installation DVD?

Are you still experiencing this problem (and wanting help)?

I am experiencing the same problem -- or one very similar to it. I don't see an option when booting from the CD to include the maverick kernel, which I need due to hardware issues that are *only* resolved in Maverick.

I tried to work around it by copying the Maverick kernel and initrd to the lucid directory on my PXE server, which almost works fine but when I am installing packages in the pkgsel/include task I get this error:

"Can't exec "aptitude": no such file or directory at /usr/bin/debconf-apt-progress line 130, <STDIN> line 2.

I assume this is probably because /usr/bin/debconf-apt-progress is different on the maverick ramdisk than it is on the lucid ramdisk. Furthermore, I assume that the ramdisks are where kernel modules lie?
