White fuzzy screen during bootup, can't get to install screen

When I boot ubuntu the screen becomes white and freezes just after the UBUNTU boot screen finishes moving.

   sudo lshw -C display

It sounds like a graphics display problem, maybe.

Is this with release 11.04 Natty Narwhal?

You could try the LTS release, 10.04 and see if that works better for you.
