assign windows key to something else?

Asked by Andrew Corser

I am still working on setting up netbooks for use in primary school. I would like a key to bring up the Applications menu item - it's a lot easier to say to the kids "hit the windows key" - can I assign a key to do that in Ubuntu 10.04.2?

Under Preferences -> Keyboard Shortcuts there's an action titled "Show the panel's main menu" which by default is Alt+F1. Now you would ideally just click there and press the Windows key, but for some reason beyond me, it won't take the Windows key alone. If you want to configure that, just press Alt + F2 to open a run dialog and then paste in the following:

gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/global_keybindings/panel_main_menu --type string "Super_L"

Now when you go into the Keybord Shortcuts menu you should see Super L next to "Show the panel's main menu" and it should work. Below is a link to a more graphical explanation.

Can you help with this problem?
