Seriously need help and information for this problem

Asked by Curtis John Goldsborough

First I'm using a Dell Optiplex GX100 with 512mb of memory. Can not access Windows XP to give you more information. First I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 using Windows Installer. Ubuntu 11.04 messed up my system so I un installed it.Next I downloade Ubuntu 9.04 and burned it to a cd. Restarted my system and made sure that it read just the CD. I chose to install Ubuntu along side Windows XP. It started to load and then this error message came up
"Migrate Documents and Settings. ERROR informing the kernel about modifications to partition /DEV/SDC5=DEVICE or resource busy.
This means Linux won't know about any changes you made to /DEV/SDC5 until you reboot--So you shouldn't mount it or use it in any way before rebooting."

After clicking ignore Ubuntu finally installed and asked me to reboot my system which I did. When it was booting up I went back into my bios and reset it to it's original setup C:\ then CD. The next screen that faced me was a black screen with this error message. Running installed GRUB Bootloader GRUB Loading please wait. Error 18.

I have now completely lost my Windows Xp and the only way I can get in to Ubuntu is by putting the Ubuntu CD back in then click on try Ubuntu without changing your system. Then it loads ubuntu.

Is this able to be fixed or do I have to wipe my whole hard drive clean and start from scratch?

I recommend you do a true install and make Ubuntu resize the NTFS and make room for itself. Wubi is a real pain to fix if it goes wrong whereas a true install is much easier to fix.

Please run the bootinfoscript ( http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/ ) and post the results to http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/ and then return the pastebin address here.

If you installed 9.04 direct to disk (which is sounds like you did) then you likely have the grub bootloader. So... provided you didn't wipe windows, it should be sufficient to reinstall the windows bootloader to get windows booting again.
i.e. boot from windows repair disk or install DVD to a repair prompt, and run "fixmbr"

There is another way via the Ubuntu CD if you don't have a windows repair cd.

But the best is to run the bootinfoscript and then we can see what is up first.

Thank you for the information. As much as I like ubuntu it is not worth the aggravation and frustration of trying to load it onto my system which for some strange reason will not let Ubuntu work correctly. Ended up doing a wipe of my hard drive and reinstalled my original Windows XP Professional edition.
