Re-installing ubuntu

Asked by matthewbajusz

I have had several problems with ubuntu and i wish to reinstall ubuntu (last time i tryed to update i had several problems occuring to where i had to backdoor to get onto my computer) for some reason mid ubuntu update it froze and i do not think it finished updating.

What i would like to do is reinstall ubuntu but i do not know how to go about doing that because my brother gave me this laptop with ubuntu already installed.

OR if someone could just help me fix the current problems happening that would work out great too.

Thank you.

You'll need to back up all your important data before you start. You'll also need a copy of the LiveCD for the version of Ubuntu that you want to install.

I recommend that you set up a separate /home partition for this install because it makes re-installing and upgrading a lot simpler if you don't have to worry about your data being on the same partition as the OS that you are installing.

You'll need to make a 15 or 20 GB partition for Ubuntu / , a swap partition of at least your RAM size, and the rest of the drive can be /home.

For some simple instructions on doing this kind of install have a look at this tutorial:

@Chris: 11.04 has now an option to "Upgrade system" at installation. It makes dedicated /home partition less useful if people stay with Ubuntu. It is still useful to migrate to another distro or downgrading to a previous version of Ubuntu.
