How much memory does the older computer have? You might need a low resource requirement distribution like Lubuntu.
Try jumping into a text based install by typing something at the screen showing icons of a little person and a keyboard (or typing F6 early in the boot process to jump to language selection). See if you have any error messages on any virtual terminals (Type alt F1 or ctrl-alt-F1) Maybe try the alternate iso for a text based install.

where do you find the alternative iso for the text based install

Under the additional options on the ubuntu download page:

I had exactly the same problem and was able to fix it after painful tests:

1) when booting from CD, hit F6 to have more options and select nomodeset. Hopefully this will help you to install (insist, if nomodeset does not work then try to manually edit the boot options: after "quiet splash" you can insert options such as "nomodeset", "modeset=0", "i915.modeset=0"

2) once installed, you are asked to reboot, and if you do nothing more, the problem will remain. So at reboot, hit SHIFT until you have the GRUB menu, then e to edit the boot commands, and add the option that worked immediately after quiet splash.

3) if this works you have to make the change persistent: once logged on, edit (with sudo) the file /etc/default/grub and do the same thing

hope this helps!
