Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?
If you used a CD, did you burn the CD as slowly as possible? Did you check the CD for defects?
Did you test your RAM?

I think that you are trying to specify partitions manually. Am I right?

If you specify partition manually, you must mount "/" folder on ext4 partition when you define this partition.

I think the issue is that, when you click particular partition;

Just like

you think you got
sda 1: (which is ntfs) which may contact windows 7
sda2: fat (now this is free and you choose this for ubuntu)
and it shows root file is missing..
Now before doing anything, start you Windows 7, empty a 30 or 40 GB space and make a new NTFS file drive.. Like if you have windows 7 in C drive, and you got two extra drives D and E, partition D or E based on your choice and format it as NTFS and clean everything which it got.

Example:
Now after installation you have
C Drive: Windows 7
D Drive : Empty (NTFS file to install Ubuntu)
E drive: for you any data.

Now the procedure starts

First put the Ubuntu installation CD. Restart the computer, when it boots Click enter. and it boots from CD isn't. than go for installation. Now you will go for manual partition.

And I'm sure you can see C D and E drives with the format which you created. and it even specifies the data stored in. Now select(Click) D DRIVE, Than click "Change", mention "/" as path, change the partition to EXT4 file. Than Check mark "Format". and OK,

Now you can see same 5 partition

Like
SDA
SDA 1 C DRive ( NTFS : which contains WIndows 7)
SDA 2 D DRive (EXT 4)
SDA 3 E Drive

Now single click SDA 2 EXT 4 colum. Remember don't click SDA.. You have to click SDA 2 only once and than click forward or next in the installation window. Than it starts to format SDA 2 drive

Hi rohit thanks for ur reply but the problem here is it si not showing any drive even though i did partition in windows7 its is showing full 250gb(my harddisk capacity is 250gb) is free space.

So now if it is showing 250 gb free space then what about the windows7 which i installed in C drive.

I did partition when i installing windows7 i left 80 gb as a free space.

And the main thing is it is no at all detecting the windows7 itself when i do direct installation with ubuntu CD
it directly showing the system has detected no operating system

"no root file system is defined" message when using Wubi means that Ubuntu cannot read your hard drive correctly. This can be because of some sort of raid setup, a mix of MBR and GPT partition table info, some other corruption that doesn't affect Windows, ... other?.

This might explain why you lost your windows when you tried to partition using linux.

Anyway... where are you at now? Do you have windows back? Are you still trying to install Ubuntu? If so, boot from the Ubuntu CD, select "Try it" without installing, and download and run the bootinfoscript as described here http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/
When you've got the RESULTS.txt file, paste it here http://paste.ubuntu.com/ and then post the pastebin address back here.

Hi Hemanth,

Swap file- RAM size, in linux is just 1000 or sometimes 4000Mb free space for better hibernation. We have to do it in Ubuntu, and probably some linux too.

I personally believe its the issue with the partition which was early in Windows 7. Probably it was hidden. and diskmgmt.msc command in start->run may have showed you. However you told that you are installing Windows 7. Hope after installation I would say simple direct booting from CD may work for you. Run Try Ubuntu, and you can see Install Ubuntu Icon on desktop. And click and follow the procedure.

Or.
BEST

Try to check this link below, if you already installed Windows 7 I hope you can check this and do as It mentions and follow the procedure based on

http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/dual-boot-windows-7-ubuntu.html

DON'T HURRY, since I'm sure this will get the solution. And remember this, In the link, he gives free space for use, to ubuntu, You can can the file format to FAT File for free space at last. Why FAT 32 ?
Its because fat file can be detected both even booting through Ubuntu or Windows 7. So you can share the partitioned Drive and share your music video or any data..

What I mean here is, as you said you got 250GB. And let us assume, you installed Windows 7 on 100GB and left the remaining.

now
100GB - NTFS - Windows 7
150GB - Free space

Now what I mean is, what ever free space you give, during installing by above procedure, after giving EXT4 partition for Ubuntu, let the free space take FAT 32 File system.

Hope this works fine..

hi rohit
i did what u said but the thing is here the ubuntu is not detecting the free space what i left during windows partition...
it is showing full 250gb as a free space...
even though if the free space is in NTFS file format if it open in ubuntu we can change that into FAT format but it not at all detecting and the link what u sent i already saw that through that only i started doing ubuntu installation then too i am getting same error
i think the ubuntu is not detecting the windows drive...:(
do u have any idea how to solve the error "no root file system is defined" while doing installation process through WUBI.

And could you share the image of your partitioned drives. and the way the partition looks in your windows and the error report. Its simple use this http://www.imageshare.web.id/
and send me the image of the partition you made and error image

And I am sure that the partition you made is hidden. And issue is with the Hidden partition.
Try to check this,
Run Disk Management , format the drive, and assign it a drive letter:

1. Press Windows Logo+R , type diskmgmt.msc in the box, and click OK .
2. Right-click the disk and and click Format .
3. Right-click the disk and click Change Drive Letter and Paths .

And if possible send me that disk management partition screen shot so that I can figure out your partition. If nothing is working, try to connect a pen drive or any external hdd and try to get that drive letter for Wubi. And personally I believe its the issue with the dynamic disk partitioning which happens in Windows7 which doesn't allow Wubi to detect your new drive, so try for external HDD

And if nothing is working right, I feel, the issue is with Ubiquity. And why don't we try ubuntu first and than Windows 7 right hahaha. So check this out, ONLY ONLY after every effort fails. Try format everything, by booting through Ubuntu Live CD and install fully. Since anyway you got Windows7 DVD and every software, so format your whole disk and than check is your system working fine. If you liked it, than simply post a new thread mentioning how to install Windows7 on Ubuntu 11.10. Isn't this better to check it. If you want any try by yourself, you can find this link helpful. So Try Ubuntu only installation, if you like it working and works fine than you can try to install Windows on Ubuntu by following bellow procedure.

Hi Hemant,

Hmm, I think this is called UEFI Framework, And your system is probably DELL 64Bit Processor or other brand, which have a System Setup program enabling you to specify the boot mode for installing any operating system:
# UEFI boot mode is an enhanced 64-bit boot interface based on Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) specifications that overlays the system BIOS.
Just a guess. If not tell, what ever be the brand, check your company website and Type how to configure UEFI Framework.

Just like BIOS, UEFI is a new Framework.(Advanced BIOS most Intel processors are coming up for their business)

Since UEFI is a new Framework which was developed for advanced BIOS option. Basically most operating systems support, normal Boot / non UEFI or EFI Frameworks or BIOS mode. So when you installed UBUNTU 11.01 which got GRUB2 which is new booting framework for that, which will not understand UEFI framework when you try Win7, so it says GPT partition style. Since GRUB is GPT. And I hope you got to know Windows 7 64bit is now most systems got on UEFI based Framework, so it won't get to know what to do.

So basically your booting sequence is in UEFI, which makes it unable to check the boot loader files of any other operating system, which may be even applies while installing UBUNTU. Now probably you may ask me, am I able to change the boot change or can you do that.

You can change the Boot Framework to normal BIOS version, but your system supports UEFI framework, so it may install Ubuntu but it won't detect Windows 7 when you try for Win7, since than the boot sequence changes to GRUB. Since it always like Graphics that this and all stuffs interlinked.

Even programmers can edit the BIOS codes and boot any operating system, but than may loose your license agreement and even may cause issues further which only a tech guy can do it with your system. Even APPLE got EFI.2 framework, which makes it tough for other operating system to install Leopard or Lion Operating system to install on WINDOWS7, since its PC Architecture and again different Boot Framework(EFI.2x or something).

So what I can tell you know is, if your system is under warranty, go to service centre and ask that guy to install Ubuntu on your Windows7. If he truly knows the code language to change and allow Ubuntu than he can do it and your warranty won't break. Hardly those tech support guys won't do that. But you can do a try. Since its all related to Boot code(i mean BOOTING FRAMEWORK CODES which allows only one type of Operating system:Business you know what Windows are doing from years) hahaha.. Or wait for sometime, I'm sure Ubuntu too will start something good to make it work on UEFI systems, since UBUNTU got more than many software developers working free than Microsoft or Apple. hahaaaa

However if your system as I believe UEFI, you can try to search in your manual or site is that what I'm talking. If not, even just check with your technician since he may do it so that you won't look your warranty by doing any coding.

Check this, it may tell you what I'm talking about. If possible download ArchLinux and try it at last. But However my suggestion is at present situation Ubuntu 11.10 isn't working on new UEFI, If your Boot isn't support UEFI Framework, than we can try but yet I would not suggest, since it may loose your boot order, So better to wait.

Check the link to know more, Probably ArchLinux works for you.
