un do 11.04

Asked by jim mills

I've made some mistakes with my computers but installing 11.04 sets a new standard. Is there some way to go back to 10.04 or do I have to nuc the hard drive and start over?
tnx
jim

Hi,
Yes, you can downgrade 11.04 to 10.04 but... it is quite complicated and unreliable, this may generate many bugs in package dependencies.
I recommend you backup your personal data (often stored under /home) on another partition or external hard drive, download Ubuntu 10.10 (http://releases.ubuntu.com/10.10/), install it and then reinstall your programs, restore your data ...

You will need to reinstall Lucid if you want Lucid. If you upgraded directly from Lucid to Natty then this is probably WHY you are getting the problem. I suggest you first try a clean install of Natty, and boot to the classic desktop.

By the way, if the thing about Ubuntu 11.04 that you don't like is the new interface (Unity), you can switch to the classic interface easily (see https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+question/157769).

I changed to the "Classic" GUI (interface) which helps a lot, I will wait and see about the other small gripes now that I have something I can use. I will say that if Unity it the direction Ubuntu is going, I will go in another direction. It was bad enough when modem support was dropped (not all of us have the option of broadband), but Unity is too much.
