Overwriting old operating system/partitions

When attempting to install ubuntu in order to completely erase and replace windows xp on a dell inspiron 6000, it is unable to get past the step in the installation process in which it creates a partition. Any suggestions?

It gives an error prior to and ends the install at

Creating ext4 file system for / in partition #1 of SCSI1 (0,0,0) (sda)...

Input/output error during write on /dev/sda

Download the iso again and MD5sum check it, burn it to another dvd and then reinstall it.
