Cannot install Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit desktop on Dell Vostro 3750 laptop

Asked by Hasan Ozduru

Bought Dell Vostro 3750 laptop (http://www.dell.com/uk/business/p/vostro-3750/pd) which came with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit desktop version and burned it onto CD. Restarted the laptop and booted with CD. It shows blank screen and doesn't let me to install Ubuntu. Also tried it with USB stick, same problem.

What is the issue and how I can resolve it?

Thanks

Did you MD5 test the .iso image before you burned it to CD/DVD or wrote it to the USB flash drive? (See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM.) If not, please do that now. If that doesn't check out, you'll have to redownload the .iso image, MD5 test the new image, and (assuming the new one checks out) burn a new disc or write it to the USB flash drive again.

Did you check and verify the MD5SUMS?

I downloaded winMD5Sum and test the .iso image - I get 'MD5 Check Sums are the same'. So is the problem something else?

Download and burn the Alternate install CD: http://releases.ubuntu.com/natty/ubuntu-11.04-alternate-amd64.iso
You will get the text-based installer.

May be this is a typical bug of Ubuntu 11.04, version 10.10 might work.
Try this one: http://releases.ubuntu.com/maverick/ubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64.iso
(don't burn it, put it on an usb stick, it's less expensive ;) )

Tried Ubuntu 10.10, gives same error. I am having difficulty to understand not being able to install one of the strongest version of Linux desktop OS to latest Dell product.

Hi,

Have you tried version 10.04 LST. It is a Long Time Support version and it is much more reliable.

As a slight correction, it's LTS (Long Term Support).

Which of the variants of the Vostro 3750 do you have? I have a Natty 11.04 installed without problems on the Vostro (actually I am using this install to type this message). But I think I used the alternate install because my hard disk in encrypted so this may be a point to keep in mind. I can also remember that in my first install I needed to type the password for the HD blindly. Afterwards I changed something in the grub config and now it works like a charm.

I resolved the issue, thanks. I had to turn acpi off to make it work.
