2 Operating Systems on one laptop: Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7 - How do I make Ubuntu my only OS?

Asked by Nick Quattrocchi

I have a 1 year old Acer Aspire 2GB laptop that originally came with Windows 7 as the operating system. I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 to run alongside Windows. I really like Ubuntu, and would like to make it my only operating system on the computer. How do I replace Windows 7 totally with Ubuntu 11.04 (without having to reinstall it)? Thanks!

If you installed Ubuntu and running along with Windows 7. You can run with Ubuntu LiveCD and delete the Windows 7 partition and expand Ubuntu's partition with gparted or format that partition as a spare. Also you can modify grub to hide Windows 7 for a time.

If you remove Windows partitions, you will modify order of partitions and could have to reinstall boot loader from CD (or USB) : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Reinstalling%20from%20LiveCD

I wouldn't mess with the partition's Nick, they boot in a certain order, and if you mess with them your netbook won't boot, especially if you installed ubuntu on a win7 machine-trust me I know from experience because I've done it, and you'll end up in rescue mode in which case you'll need the cd anyway. Go with the delance option and it will/should save you any headaches.
