if i install ubuntu can i remove win xp

There is an option in the beginning were you will be asked something like do you want to install alongside Win. Just chose yes.

Your question is not clear. Are you trying to install inside Windows via Wubi or alongside/in place of Windows with Ubuntu media (CD or USB) ? If you want to wipe out XP, install directly from Ubuntu media and choose "Use whole disk".
